¿Es la vida naturalmente cómica o trágica?

Yo diría que es naturalmente cómica. A veces las cosas más ordinarias pueden resultar en las situaciones de comedia más graciosas, al menos para mí. Siempre digo: “Esto podría ser material de comedia” y eso desemboca en una idea escrita en un post-it pegado en mi escritorio (y normalmente ahí muere).

En cambio existen personas como Woody Allen, que la comedia y la tragedia en la vida. Y además hacen películas con ese tema y “Melinda y Melinda” (que vi por primera vez la noche del lunes) es prueba de ello.

La premisa de la película se centra en cuatro escritores que están comiendo en un restaurante. De pronto dos de ellos comienzan a hablar sobre si la vida es naturalmente cómica o trágica. Uno de los otros 2 (el cuarto escritor en una mujer) les da el inicio de una historia a ambos: “Una angustiada mujer toca a la puerta e interrumpe una cena”. De ahí los escritores empiezan a construir sus historias, una cómica y una trágica.

Radha Mitchell interpreta a Melinda en ambas historias. Me asombró como puede hacer el mismo personaje de dos maneras tan contrastantes. Sombría y casi suicida en lo trágico y dulce y carismática en lo cómico.

Chloë Sevigny (Big Love), Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy en Trainspotting) y Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men) le acompañan en la parte trágica de la película y hacen un trabajo bastante decente.

Del lado de la comedia están Will Ferrell (¿necesito decir más?) y Amanda Peet (The Whole Nine Yards). Steve Carell sale en algunas escenas como el amigo de Will Ferrell.

El escritor que cuenta la historia vista desde el lado de la comedia es interpretado por Wallace Shawn, que estoy seguro que todos lo hemos visto pero no sabíamos cómo se llamaba hasta ahora.

Esta es una buena película mitad tragedia, mitad comedia romántica que les recomiendo vean si ustedes como yo están tratando de ver más cine de Woody Allen.

Went to the movies to see Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. This is the third Woody Allen movie I’ve seen (other two are Annie Hall and The Curse of the Jade Scorpion) and I’ve enjoyed this cinematic adventures quite a lot I have to confess.

This one tells the story of Vicky(Rebecca Hall) who is engaged and apparently everything works out fine for her, in love terms and Cristina(Scarlett Johansson), who just ended a troubled relationship. They are both about to spend eight weeks in Barcelona for a summer. So far, so good.

Enters Juan Antonio(Javier Bardem), spanish painter with a background of violent-fights with ex-wife Maria Elena(Penelope Cruz), approaches the girls at a restaurant one night and eventually has sex with both of them and the ex-wife as well. Of course there is a lot of other things in the movie but don’t want to spoil for those who might see it. There is a whole lot more to sex in the movie, but I used this cheap resource to get your attention and make you read the entire post.

So, I tried to rescue some of the pearls of wisdom displayed on this movie. This is what I’ve found:

• Women: Even if you are engaged, you can go on an eight week trip to Europe with your best girlfriend, have sex with Spanish Painters and your husband-to-be won’t know because you can hide those feelings quite well. Don’t forget to take your cellphone with you to be reachable wherever you are.
• Men: If you are sensitive, passionate and honest, you can request for sex up front and eventually get it. It helps to take american tourists to small towns and get them drunk at the local bistro.
• Women: It is OK to not know what you want. Lesbian experiences and menage-a-trois are OK, you are searching for your inner self. It is also OK to know what you don’t want… but after the lesbian thing and the menage-a-trois what else would you want, right?

Well, that’s pretty much what I did learned. Of course for this to work you would have to be an imaginary character living in the mind of Woody Allen, Spanish or a very liberal, open-minded girl(if so, contact me). Though the sensitive-passionate-honest gimmick it’s worth the try.
